Installing G.729 / G.723 / Speex Codecs

« Back

SYMPTOMS

You are looking to install one or more of the following codecs for your Asterisk installation:

  • G.729
  • G.723
  • Speex

SOLUTION

If you wish to install registered G.729 channels from Digium(tm), please follow the instructions for installation from the e-mail you received from Digium(tm) when you purchased the license(s). The instructions below are only for those who wish to use the "free for educational use" codecs.
You can download and install the G.729/G.723 pre-compiled codecs here:

You must choose the appropriate codec for the architecture that your VPS is hosted on. This information can be acquired by issuing the following command via SSH as root:

# cat /proc/cpuinfo

In most cases you will want the prescott or core2, but you can create a support ticket for confirmation.

These codecs are provided for educational use. You will be required to secure the proper licensing, et. al. related to these codecs (esp. G.729) if using in a commercial setting. If you need G.729 licenses, we offer those as an add-on service. Please inquiry about pricing via support.

If you are looking to install the Speex codec, please contact us for a pre-compiled Asterisk module by creating a support ticket.
Finally, install the downloaded file(s) to your /usr/lib/asterisk/modules/ directory and restart asterisk. To confirm the new codecs are installed and working, enter the Asterisk CLI:

# /usr/sbin/asterisk -r

Issue the following command:

> show translation

You should see output with translation times in the associated codec columns. Your installation is now complete!
